God is For Us
God Is For Us: The Unshakable Security of the Believer
We love to quote the "victorious" verses of Romans 8. We put them on coffee mugs and bumper stickers. But let’s be honest: sometimes life feels a lot more like the struggle of Romans 7.
You’re sitting here today and you’ve got questions that coffee-mug theology can't answer:
"If I’m a child of God, why is my body breaking down?"
"If the Spirit lives in me, why is my marriage falling apart?"
"If God is for me, why does it feel like the world is winning?"
Today, we aren’t looking for cheap clichés. We are looking for an anchor. Paul doesn't give us a pep talk; he gives us a declaration of war against despair.
The Role of the Spirit: Our Divine Advocate
As we’ve seen throughout this series, Jesus accomplishes our justification (cleansing us from sin), but the Holy Spirit accomplishes our sanctification (the lifetime of spiritual growth). Paul shows us that the Spirit isn't just a passenger; He is the power source for our security.
The Five Pillars of Unshakable Faith
1. The Pillar of Eternal Comfort (vv. 18–25)
Paul says, "I consider." In the Greek, that’s an accounting term. He’s got a ledger out. On one side: Cancer, loneliness, poverty, death. On the other side: The Glory. Paul looks at the scale and says, "It’s not even a contest." Your suffering is real, but it is temporary. Your glory is eternal. Paul describes the earth "groaning" like a woman in labor. Those labor pains aren’t the sounds of death; they are the sounds of birth. Something is coming that will make every tear you’ve shed look like a drop in the ocean of God’s joy.
2. The Pillar of Help in Prayer (vv. 26–27)
Have you ever been so broken you couldn't even find a "Dear God" to start your prayer? Paul says: That’s okay. When you are at your weakest, the Holy Spirit is at His loudest. He takes your wordless groans—those heavy sighs, those midnight tears—and translates them into the perfect will of God. You don't have to be eloquent; you just have to be His.
3. The Pillar of God’s Purpose (vv. 28–30)
We treat verse 28 like a band-aid, but it’s actually a backbone. God isn't saying everything that happens is good. He’s saying He is working everything together for good. He takes the black threads of your pain and the gold threads of His grace and weaves a masterpiece. The goal isn't your comfort; it’s your conformity to the image of Jesus.
4. The Pillar of Legal Victory (vv. 31–34)
Paul steps into the role of a defense attorney:
Who can be against us? (Let them try.)
Who can bring a charge? (God already tore up the rap sheet.)
Who is to condemn? (The only Judge with the right to condemn you is the One who died to save you.)
5. The Pillar of the Great “Nothing” (vv. 35–39)
Paul lists the worst things imaginable: famine, nakedness, the sword. He doesn't say we escape them. He says we are "more than conquerors" in them.
A conqueror defeats the enemy. A "more than conqueror" takes the enemy’s weapons and uses them for his own gain. Your trials aren't just being defeated; they are being forced to serve your spiritual growth.
The Mirror of Truth: Stop Living Like an Orphan
You say you believe Romans 8, but are you living like a spiritual orphan?
Do you panic when the bank account gets low as if God has forgotten your address?
Do you carry the guilt of sins God has already buried in the deepest sea?
Do you act like a "bad day" has cancelled out God's "good grace"?
If the Creator of the ends of the earth is "for you," why are you so intimidated by the opinions of people? You are living like a prisoner when the cell door has been ripped off the hinges.
Conclusion: The Golden Bookends
Romans 8 starts with No Condemnation (v. 1) and ends with No Separation (v. 39). If you are in Christ, you are bookended by grace.
You cannot fall out of His hands. You cannot outrun His Spirit. You cannot exhaust His mercy. Whatever you are walking through—whether it’s a valley of shadow or a mountain of doubt—look at the Cross. If He didn't spare His Son, He won't spare any resource in heaven to bring you home.
God is for you. Now, start living like it.
